Mentoring

Leadership Academy mentoring scheme

The Leadership Academy is pleased to announce the Leadership Mentoring Scheme.

Aim

The aim of the Leadership Mentoring scheme is to improve the capabilities of MPS leaders by identifying their goals and guide them towards attaining them by developing the required skills, knowledge and behaviours at work.  The scheme will also encourage the most effective leadership practices.

What does this mean?

It means that the Leadership Mentors will provide the Mentee with options and support which enables the Mentee to make informed decisions and actions in order to move towards their goals. The Mentor will also invite the Mentee to step outside their comfort zone on occasions.

What is mentoring?

Mentoring is regarded as a relationship in which one person (the mentor), usually someone more senior and experienced, helps another (the mentee) to discover more about themselves, their potential and their capability.

Mentoring is also concerned with creating an informal environment in which one person can feel encouraged to discuss their needs and circumstance openly and in confidence with another person who is in a position to be of positive help to them.

Mentoring can be the best intervention in areas where the development task relates to an individual requiring much specialist, knowledge and information.

What is a Mentee?

A Mentee is usually someone who wishes to expand their current knowledge of the organisation and to develop skills and abilities that will assist them in their career.

What is in it for the Mentee?

To have space to share, discuss and come up with solutions to issues.

To feel confident and empowered in resolving and enhancing things the mentee is working on.

To enhance their leadership skills set.

Better understanding of strategic issues/priorities.

Opportunity to safely assess strenghts and weaknesses

Volunteer Police Cadets Mentoring Scheme

This unique scheme gives the opportunity for all MPS Police Officers and Police Staff to engage with young people from a variety of backgrounds, across all London boroughs.

What is the aim of the scheme?

To improve the capabilities of Volunteer Police Cadets by identifying their goals, developing their skills, knowledge and behaviour and addressing everyday issues in their lives. It is a chance for all Police Officers and Police Staff to use their enthusiasm and experience of the MPS to engage with today’s youth, maximising the potential of cadets and fostering a relationship that will benefit both mentor and mentee.

Who are the Volunteer Police Cadets?

There are 1,423 Volunteer Police Cadets in London, aged from 14 to 19. 44% of these cadets are from BME backgrounds. 25% of cadets are referred to the scheme by partners such as Young Offender Teams. There are plans to increase the number of cadets to 4,000 by 2012.

Cadets meet weekly across all boroughs, taking part in awareness activities, crime prevention tasks and ‘extra-curricular’ sports and events.

The Mentoring Relationship

  • Ability to communicate in a patient, non-judgemental manner.
  •  Enthusiasm, commitment and reliability.
  •  Ability to motivate and inspire.
  •  Experience of higher education and job application processes.
  • Ability to identify the needs of a young person, and help them where necessary
  • Willingness to give up one or two hours a month outside of working hours to meet your mentee
