Sergeants Operational Skills

The role of the sergeant on an operational basis remains a challenging and ever demanding position. This course aims to provide sergeants with the appropriate operational skills required to perform their role.

Who is it for?

The programme is pre promotion for Police sergeants and is delivered over a five day period.

Main learning outcomes

It is designed to cover the main aspects of an operational police sergeant on a uniformed team.

  • Briefings
    To be able to conduct effective briefing and debriefing in line with MPS standards
  • Supervision of PCSO’s
    To lead and motivate PCSOs in a values based way, understand the role of PCSOs and their rules of engagement.
  • Health and safety
    Having completed the Leadership programme, the three Leading our people modules and this course, sergeants will be supervising safely trained. This will provide basic skills around dynamic and preplanned risk assessments and to enable sergeants to carry out their duty of care for staff.
  • Supervision of stop/search
    To understand their role in supervising the whole encounter though conversations with staff as well as PACE compliance and MPS requirements
  • Basic RIPA awareness in relation to Directed and Intrusive surveillance and CHIS.
  • Managing the police response to critical incidents
    The latest information on current policy, best practice on the completion of logs, taking charge at the scene, effective briefing and debriefing, assessment of the impact of incidents on communities.
  • Missing persons
    To understand their role in the supervision of missing persons, to make an assessment of when to attend an initial investigation, to review risk assessments and to know how to access the relevant SOP.
  • Terrorism and counter terrorism
    Generating options to support local and national Counter Terrorist policing through the effective gathering and dissemination of intelligence and proactive prevention activities.
  • Management of firearms incidents
    To understand appropriate ACPO guidelines and to be better equipped to make initial operational decisions prior to the attendance of an accredited silver commander

Future development

This course will be regularly reviewed to ensure that it is operationally relevant.

Duration and location

Five days non-residential at the Leadership Academy, Peel Centre, or Orpington Police Station. It is able to be taken to the workplace or delivered at remote sites.
