Solutions focused Leadership Academy Action Learning

What is Action Learning?

History of Action Learning

  • Origins in 1940's - Reg Revans, NCB, Belgian Government
  • Widespread use in private sector (Shell, BP, Novartis)
  • Public sector (NHS, Education, BBC)
  • Cross-organisational sets-shared learning and beginner mind, wisdom of crowds

"Action Learning is a continuous process of learning and reflection, supported by colleagues, with an intention of getting things done. Through action learning individuals learn with and from each other by working on real problems and reflecting on their own experiences. The process helps us to take an active stance towards life and helps to overcome the tendency (merely) to think, feel and be passive towards the pressures of life"
(McGill & Beatty 1995)

Action Learning really does put the action into learning. It translates into collaborative learning - "learning with and from each other".

Learning is best when problem-driven as most of what we need to know we already know, but we only know when we need to know it.

Benefits/uses of Action Learning

  • Cross-organisational tool, cutting across silos for senior and middle leaders
  • Succession planning-talent pools, appeals to all learning styles
  • Concentrates on real action in the work place: double value
  • Reflection and learning are as important as doing the job
